Rhode Island To Become Fourth State to Ban Declawing

Rhode Island to become Fourth No-Declaw State –

June 26, 2025 – The cats of Rhode Island and the people who care for love them can thank Senator Melissa Murray and Representative William O’Brien because their bills to ban cruel cat declawing have passed. The law becomes effective on April 8, 2025.

The Paw Project is grateful to the coalition of dedicated individuals, who worked so hard and so long to make this dream a reality, and who represented many organizations, including Humane World for Animals, Humane Veterinary Medical Alliance, and Animal Legal Defense Fund.

New York, Maryland, and Massachusetts have also passed effective declaw prohibitions.
